Why I Love Industrial Photography
Projects like this are exactly why I love commercial photography.
Every location presents a new challenge and every client requires a different visual approach. Understanding how to read a scene and decide whether to add light, modify existing light, or simply use what's already there is a skill that takes years of experience to develop.
Industrial environments like ERP's workshop are particularly rewarding because they offer so much visual character. The textures, machinery, skilled craftsmanship and authentic working atmosphere provide endless opportunities for creating strong imagery.
What I enjoy most is the variety. One day I might be photographing beautifully styled dishes for a restaurant or food producer, carefully shaping soft light to make ingredients look fresh and appealing. The next, I'm working in a busy engineering workshop, using dramatic lighting to emphasise steel, machinery and the people who build and maintain it. The principles of photography remain the same, but the creative approach can be completely different.
The Importance of Understanding Light
People often ask what makes the difference between a good photograph and a great one. More often than not, the answer is light.
Understanding how light behaves, how it shapes a subject and how different lighting techniques influence the mood of an image is fundamental to photography. It's not something that can be learned overnight. It comes from years of experience, experimentation and working in a huge variety of environments.
This shoot for ERP was a perfect example of that. From soft natural window light, to controlled product lighting, dramatic workshop setups and the raw power of a welding torch, every image required a different approach.
These are the projects I enjoy most because they allow me to combine technical knowledge with creativity. Knowing when to add light, when to take it away and when to simply let the scene light itself is what transforms a straightforward record shot into a powerful commercial image.
